THE MARK dance company was founded in 2012 by Artistic Director, Arlynn Zachary. It is a modern-contemporary based company encouraging the aesthetic qualities and technical applications of varied dance mediums. The company’s goal is to present dance that intrigues the audience, "With each step we take, there is a mark left behind."
Works from within THE MARK’s repertoire have been displayed at the American College Dance Festival, Goucher College’s Faculty and Guest-Artist Spring Concert, North Carolina Dance Festival’s Audience Choice Show, Greensboro Fringe Festival, Charlotte Dance Festival, and is a resident company for Charlotte's Wine and Dance concerts.
The company has worked in collaboration with Charlotte based band Advertisement, and composers Jabez Co, Elizabeth Kowalski, and Cuong Nguyen, and is in current collaboration with international composer Kaito Nakahori.
THE MARK has been an influential member of the Charlotte dance community and an active part in providing opportunities for local dancers and companies to perform professional concert dance works on both proscenium and non-traditional stages.
Director's Artistic Statement:
As a choreographic dance-artist, I am inspired by the shapes of the universe within the human body. Each line and angle is what drives me to shift the dynamics of human form into a created space of articulate decisions and specific reasoning. I believe that each movement has a purpose and should be articulated with clear intention. I have developed my dance ideology from observing the blank standpoint of the human body in relationship toward the geometric possibilities it can handle. My intent is to provide a thought-process derived from the inside-out, on how to think intellectually in regards to the body's natural capabilities towards applied technique mediums. It is my goal to present choreographic work that is continuously intriguing to the audience. This sentiment stated clearly in my company's motto, "With each step we take, there is a mark left behind." Above all, my deepest aspiration is to provide people with the opportunity to experience internally and externally, the beauty and intelligent design of the human body that God has gifted to us.
